Paul states the human outlook in contrast to the divine: For men, to give their life, the recipient must be morally upright; For God, the ones saved were powerless to meet the righteous demands of God's holy law. "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23. For such people Jesus died.
Jesus came with a message of peace for those who were in rebellion against Him. Jesus' death was not the start of God's love for us, but the demonstration of a love which had existed since before the beginning of time.
The way people respond to this message show how they love God. To enjoy the benefits of Jesus' death, we must come to Him and trust in Him. If Jesus did not save us, we would be lost forever. In response to this, it is reasonable for us to serve God with our lives, Romans 12:1-2.
