The Fourth Commandment is perhaps the most disputed. It is one of two that do not begin with “You shall not”. Many Christians ignore this commandment; others get mired down in what can and cannot be done of the Sabbath. The proper approach is to understand the principle.
Moses did not record the first instance of the Sabbath in Exodus 20. It was at Creation, Genesis 2:2-3 & Exodus 20:11. God’s purpose in creating in 6 days and resting on the 7th was to set a pattern for us. God has set 6 days for us to do our legitimate occupation. The 7th day is for public worship, private worship and reflection, and acts of charity and necessity.
The Sabbath should be a delight as we consider God’s goodness to us in providing everything we need in this life and our hope for eternal rest in His presence in the life to come.
